Application Guide - Agricultural or Equine Exempt Permit

Step 1: Land Use Research

The first step in determining whether an exemption is right for your project is to identify how your land is zoned. Inquire with the Planning Division https://www.deschutes.org/askaplanner to ensure the project meets all zoning and land use requirements and that the property’s zoning qualifies the building for an exemption.

Only buildings in areas zoned EFU, F1, F2 or MUA10 AND receiving tax deferral for farmland or forestland will be considered for an exemption.

If you are unsure if your property is receiving farmland or forestland tax deferral, contact the Assessor's Office.

Step 2: Required Documents

1. Complete an Agricultural Building Exemption Application. ( Click here )
2. Prepare a site/plot. Show the location and dimensions of all existing structures plus the proposed exempt structure. If there are multiple buildings on the site, indicate which building is related to the exemption application. 3. A floor plan designating use(s) for the proposed structure and interior rooms.
4. Elevation drawings (all four sides) for the proposed structure

Step 3: Apply for the Permit

Submit the required documents as individual PDF documents for your application proposal to permits@deschutes.org . A permit technician will review your application and notify you of fees to be paid. Upon payment, the application will be reviewed. The review period can take two to four weeks.

Other Considerations

Additional permits will be required for all electrical, mechanical and plumbing. If plumbing is proposed in the building, a septic permit will also be required.
