Waste Prevention

Preventing waste is a crucial element of sustainable materials management. By stopping waste before it's created, we can significantly reduce the environmental impacts linked to the entire life cycle of materials. These materials carry a carbon footprint long before they reach their 'end-of-life' disposal.
Waste prevention is about using less and making mindful choices before purchasing or using anything. It's considering the impact of every step, from production to disposal-upstream to downstream on both people and the planet.
For every pound of waste we generate at home, an astounding 71 pounds are generated upstream*. (TRUE Waste Health and Environmental Justice 2023)
While recycling, recovery, and proper disposal are important for reducing the impacts of materials, these strategies alone don't adequately address the majority of emissions. Waste prevention offers a more substantial reduction by focusing on reducing material consumption, encouraging the continued reuse of materials, and promoting repairs to extend their usability.
WASTE PREVENTION TIPS
Pause Before Purchasing: Ask yourself, “Do I really need this item?” Consider if it's something you'll use often or if it's a temporary need.
Rent or Borrow: For items you might only need occasionally, explore rental options or borrow from friends or neighbors. Click here to learn about the Library of Things. Click here to see what is available through DIY Cave. Click here to rent out a reusable dish kit for parties and events.
Choose Pre-Owned: Whenever possible, prioritize shopping for pre-owned or refurbished products, which reduces the demand for new materials.
Shop Locally: Support local businesses to minimize shipping and packaging waste, and reduce your carbon footprint.
Invest in Quality: Buy high-quality, durable products that are designed to last. Look for items that can be easily repaired to extend their lifespan. Click here to learn when the next repair cafe is being held.
Opt for Minimal Packaging: Seek out products with minimal or no packaging, and bring your own reusable bags and containers when shopping.
Repair and Reuse: Instead of discarding items, try to repair them or repurpose them in creative ways to give them a new life. Learn to repair at the next Repair Café or join the fixer volunteer list to share your skills with others.
Donate Usable Goods: If you no longer need an item but it's still in good condition, donate it to someone who can use it, rather than throwing it away.
