Mattress Recycling

WHY
In 2022, Oregon became the fourth U.S. state to pass a law creating a statewide mattress recycling program. Senate Bill 1576 requires mattress manufacturers to establish an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program, making it easier for consumers to recycle unwanted mattresses.
The law aims to increase mattress recycling, reduce illegal dumping, create recycling-sector jobs, and ensure convenient drop-off locations are available in every county.
The Mattress Recycling Council, the approved stewardship organization, has set a recycling assessment of $22.50. This fee applies to each mattress or box spring purchased in-store or online and covers the costs of program operations, including environmentally sound collection, renovation, reuse, and recycling.
Starting January 1, 2025, mattress producers must participate in developing and running this statewide collection system. The law also sets expectations for reducing illegal dumping and meeting recycling goals.
