Demographics Data

Demographic factors like population density, education level, household income, age distribution of the population, and poverty, among others, influence the health of our community.

In 2017, we updated the 2015 Central Oregon Regional Health Assessment (RHA) with new data. This page provides an overview of updated data on demographics. Please read through the information below, or download the demographics overview handout from the supporting documents section at the bottom of the page.

You can find additional data related to demographics, as well as information on a variety of other health topics in the Regional Health Assessment Midpoint Update document.

The American Community Survey (ACS) is conducted annually by the federal government, and it provides us with important information about our community and the people who live in Central Oregon. The ACS allows us to monitor the population size of our county to see how our community is growing. Since the 2015 Regional Health Assessment (RHA) was published, the population sizes of Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson Counties have all increased. Of the three Central Oregon counties, Jefferson County was the fastest growing county by percentage.

Median Annual Household Income

The ACS also provides county-level information on residents' income, including median annual income for households. Median annual household income was $51,223 in Deschutes County, which means that half of households in our county have an income higher than $51,223 and half have an income lower than $51,223. Since the 2015 RHA was published, median annual household income increased by $1,014 and $2,993 in Deschutes and Jefferson Counties, respectively, and decreased by $1,659 in Crook County.

We can also learn about home ownership in our community using ACS data. Around 65% of Deschutes County residents own their homes, which is lower than the percent in Crook County and Jefferson County. Since the 2015 RHA was published, the percentage of residents who own their homes decreased in Crook and Deschutes Counties, but increased in Jefferson County.

The Oregon Department of Education collects data each school year to estimate the number of students experiencing homelessness across the state. Since the 2015 RHA was published, the percentage of students who experienced homelessness increased in Crook County, but decreased in Deschutes and Jefferson Counties as a whole. The Sisters school district in Deschutes County had an increase in the percentage of students experiencing homelessness.
