Landfill Tours
You are invited to learn more about waste management through a tour of Deschutes County's Knott Landfill. Landfills are more than just places where our trash ends up-they are remarkable examples of environmental engineering that can even create natural habitats. Deschutes County staff invite you on a free tour to explore how we manage landfills, composting, and recycling facilities, showcasing our commitment to environmental stewardship.
What will you see/learn on the tour:
- The specialized recycling facilities
- Transfer station
- Compost facility
- Where landfill gas is burned off and why
- Options for creating green energy
- Why waste reduction is important
Tour basics:
- Tours last approximately 1-1.5 hours
- We can accommodate up to 30 people per group. Special arrangements can be made for larger groups by contacting us via email.
- Visitors must be at least 5 years old. A special request can be made for small group of young children.
- All folks must wear closed-toed shoes. This is mandatory.
- Guests will be given safety vests to wear for the duration of the tour.
- Participants must signed a release form. Parental signatures are required for anyone under the age of 18, Waivers are filled out online here.
