Compacting at Knott

You are invited to learn more about waste management through a tour of Deschutes County's Knott Landfill. Landfills are more than just places where our trash ends up-they are remarkable examples of environmental engineering that can even create natural habitats. Deschutes County staff invite you on a free tour to explore how we manage landfills, composting, and recycling facilities, showcasing our commitment to environmental stewardship.


What will you see/learn on the tour:

  • The specialized recycling facilities
  • Transfer station
  • Compost facility
  • Where landfill gas is burned off and why
  • Options for creating green energy 
  • Why waste reduction is important

Tour basics:

  • Tours last approximately 1-1.5 hours
  • We can accommodate up to 30 people per group. Special arrangements can be made for larger groups by contacting us via email. 
  • Visitors must be at least 5 years old. A special request can be made for small group of young children.
  • All folks must wear closed-toed shoes. This is mandatory.
  • Guests will be given safety vests to wear for the duration of the tour.
  • Participants must signed a release form. Parental signatures are required for anyone under the age of 18, Waivers are filled out online here.
