PURPOSE AND NEED

The segment of Hunnell Road between Loco Road, at the northerly Bend city limit, and Tumalo Road is a north-south collector road, collecting traffic from various lower-order local roads and adjacent properties and distributing that traffic to higher-order arterial roads and principal highways via Rogers Road, Tumalo Road and Cooley Road. Presently, the segment of Hunnell Road between Loco Road and Rogers Road is an unimproved dirt road, portions of which are only passable by high-clearance vehicles, while the segment between Rogers Road and Tumalo Road is a combination of gravel and paved road with variable widths.

Since 1998, the Deschutes County Transportation System Plan (TSP) has identified projects to improve Hunnell Road; the current County TSP identifies these projects as high priority projects. Additionally, the current City of Bend TSP identifies projects to construct the portion of Hunnell Road north of Loco Road within the Bend Urban Growth Boundary as a collector road and to upgrade and realign Hunnell Road south of Loco Road to Cooley Road.

Improvement of the road will provide for enhanced mobility, connectivity, and safety along the corridor.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Project scope includes:

  • Constructing and improving the roadway to meet minimum collector road standards regarding roadway geometry.
  • Implementing traffic calming measures to reduce speed and maintain community livability.
  • Improving intersection safety through the corridor.
  • Removing roadside hazards.

Current project exhibits are available under “Supporting Documents” below.
