Permitting Requirements

The following generic constructions plans are meant to streamline the permitting process and provide a more economical option for Deschutes County citizens. Building permits (structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing) must be obtained in addition to submitting the following information. Please note any applicable Planning and/or Septic requirements apply.

Any deviation from the details below will require the applicant to provide his/her own construction drawings and any related engineering.

Background

The State of Oregon Building Codes Division (BCD) and Deschutes County Building Safety Division provide typical plans and specifications, commonly referred to as a generic plan set, for accessory structures under the Residential Specialty Code. Examples of structure types include:

  1. Garage / Storage Area
  2. Patio Cover
  3. Deck
  4. Carport
  5. Pole Building

***Note: All of these structures are non-habitable spaces

How to Apply

To apply for a building permit, using a generic plan set, the applicant must submit at a minimum:

  1. Accessory Structure Application
  2. Plot Plan (3 copies or 4 copies, if structure will contain plumbing)
  3. Applicable Generic Plan Set (see details below) – 2 copies
  4. Stamped Pre-Engineered Manufactured Truss Calculations – 2 copies

The "pre-approved” plans available are property specific and based on the snow load requirements. To verify the snow load requirements for a specific property contact our Bend office at 541-388-6574.

For properties within Deschutes County’s jurisdiction with a ground snow load requirement of 25 lb/sq ft use the BCD Ready Build Plans Program.

For all other properties within Deschutes County’s jurisdiction which exceed 25 lb/sq ft. ground snow load requirement only the Deschutes County Generic Pole Building Plans and Generic Garage Plans will be accepted (see documents below).
