Frank Paradise designed this storefront to be the model
for all Safeway Stores throughout the Pacific Northwest. Innovations
in grocery store design were found inside, where eye-level shelving was
installed for easier viewing and wide "super aisles" permitted
the use of two-decked "baby carriages". Safeway first came
to Redmond in 1931 and originally resided in the Irvin Furniture Store
building on Sixth Street. O.C. Hart Construction Company built this
store for $20,000 in 1940. Portland architect J.D. Annand modified
Paradises plans into working drawings. A Portland firm, Timber Structures,
installed the roof trusses, a patented arch-ribbed design constructed just
for Safeway. Additional subcontractors included Ted Povey, who
handled the plumbing and heating systems, and Redmond Electric, who
completed the wiring. The Art Deco styling of the building is
emphasized by the relief's on the corner pilasters and horizontal banding
at the cornice.
