The Bend Amateur Athletic Club was designed by local Bend architect Lee
Thomas in 1917 with construction completed in March of 1918. Built for a
cost of $50,000, the building is a 70 x 114 three story, un-reinforced
brick masonry structure approximately 62 feet tall. The ground level
originally contained a swimming pool, bowling lanes, a billiards room,
locker rooms with showers and a steam room, and a one-bedroom caretaker’s
apartment. The main floor contained the gymnasium, stage, and entrance
hall with ticket booths and an office area. The second floor housed three
clubrooms and a gallery overlooking the gym. The third floor consisted of
an unfinished handball court.
The gym was used as an emergency hospital during the influenza epidemic
of 1918. In 1923 the building was acquired by the Bend High School
District for use as the official gym for the new Bend High School which
was to be constructed on an adjacent lot. It remained an official gym of
Bend school district until 1978.
Portland architect F. Marion Stokes completed a major remodel to the
ground floor in 1952. This project consisted of filling in the swimming
pool and constructing additional boys and girl’s locker rooms, a small
gym and offices.
