About 50 percent of offenders last released from a state youth correctional facility at age 17 or 18 can be expected to migrate to Oregon's adult corrections' system by the end of six years of full adulthood. "Previously Incarcerated Juveniles in Oregon's Adult Corrections System," State of Oregon, Office of Economic Analysis, May 23, 2003.

 

In the United States, 70.8 percent of all deaths among persons aged 10-24, resulted from only four causes:  motor vehicle crashes, other unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide. Results from the 2003 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey showed how high school students' behavior for 30 days prior to the survey contributed to these statistics:  30.2 percent were a passenger in  a vehicle with a drinking driver; 17.1 percent carried a weapon; 44.9 percent had consumed alcohol; and 22.4 percent had used marijuana.

 

During 2003, youth fulfilling community work service hours picked up approximately 2,375 bags of debris throughout Deschutes County.

 

In Deschutes County, theft topped the list of allegations against juveniles in 2003. There were 586 allegations of theft cited against juveniles by law enforcemnt (down from 669 in 2002), followed by 351 Minor in Possession of Alcohol and 300 Assault charges.

 

In 2003, girls were responsible for 35 percent of all referrals made to Juvenile Community Justice. That's a six percent increase from 2001, which was 29 percent.

 

Deschutes County's Juvenile Community Justice Department operates a $6.3 million budget and employs 62 full-time, youth-dedicated professionals.
