Hazardous Waste
What is acceptable and what is not

Asbestos
Asbestos material is accepted at Knott Landfill on Wednesday only. Department approval is required at least 24 hours prior to disposal. There are special packaging requirements for asbestos material (call the Office for different instructions if you only have siding asbestos), and the Department of Environmental Quality ASN-4 form must also be submitted to this department. You can download an application for disposal of Non-Friable  or  Friable asbestos. The minimum charge for asbestos material is $100.00 for up to 2000 pounds. Each additional pound over 2000 is $.05.

Contaminated Soil
Contaminated soil is accepted at Knott Landfill. Like asbestos, department approval is required at least 24 hours in advance. We must also receive a laboratory report showing what contaminates are in the soil and what the levels of those contaminates are. Call the Solid Waste Department at 317-3163 to request a special waste application. The fee to dispose of contaminated soil is $.0175 per pound.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility

Please call 317-3163 to make an appointment to bring in your hazardous waste items to the new Hazardous Waste Facility.  The facility will be open by appointment only, two (2) Fridays and Saturdays per month.

A wide variety of hazardous wastes are accepted, including; Solvents, fuels, antifreeze, aerosols, cleaners, poisons, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, oil filters, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, propane tanks, pools & spa chemicals, mercury thermostats & switches, thermometers, etc.

Businesses may also participate in this program for a small fee.  Hazardous Waste Business Forms must be completed prior to bringing in your material.

Auto Batteries

Auto batteries are not accepted in the landfill; however, auto batteries may be brought to Knott Landfill or any Transfer Station free of charge for Recycling.

Paint
If the paint is dried and the can is open and exposed, it can be accepted at the disposal sites. We cannot accept any liquids at any of the county disposal sites. The Department of Solid Waste is sponsoring the "Paint Smart" program, which allows county residents to bring their new or used oil and latex-based paint, also stains, to three convenient locations in Deschutes County. Visit "The Paint Smart Program" for more complete information. If you are a contractor or a business, call the Department of Environmental Quality at 388-6146 for information about your paint disposal options.

Used Motor Oil
Used motor oil is accepted at Knott Landfill and all County Transfer Stations. Oil must be placed in a non-breakable container with a tight fitting lid. There is no charge to drop off motor oil.

Antifreeze
Antifreeze is not accepted at any of our disposal sites. You may take it to Deschutes Recycling at Knott Landfill.  Please call 388-1910 for pricing.  We would also suggest you hold your antifreeze for our Household Hazardous Waste Facility, which will accept items (2) two Fridays and Saturdays per month.  Call 317-3163 to make an appointment.

Other Household Liquid Waste
We are not authorized to accept any liquids. Small household quantities may be absorbed with dirt or kitty litter before bringing them in for disposal. A better option for disposing of household hazardous waste is to bring it to the Hazardous Waste Facility at Knott Landfill. Call the Solid Waste Department at 317-3163 for more information.

Any other questions about hazardous waste can be directed to the Department of Environmental Quality at 388-6146, or the Deschutes County Solid Waste Department at 317-3163.
