Sheriff's Posse Fundraising Warning

Deschutes County Oregon -- September 14, 2007 12:35 PM --

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Posse has recently discovered that a fundraiser scam may be occurring in the community. Individuals or agencies saying they represent the Sheriff’s Office or Sheriff’s Posse may be calling homes to solicit money for the Posse, which is false.

The Posse would like to inform Deschutes County citizens that the Posse will not be coordinating a fund raising campaign by any means this fall. The organization has held spring entertainment fundraisers (through ticket sales) in the past, but has not done so in at least three years.

The volunteer organization has raised funds in the past through a variety of fundraisers, including parking services at various Central Oregon events throughout the year.

If members of the public are contacted by any person or agency claiming to represent the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Posse and are seeking donations, they are encouraged to contact the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 388-6655.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Posse is a group of sworn, color honor guard and search volunteers serving the Sheriff’s Office under the Search and Rescue (SAR) division. The self-funded organization often works on horseback and assists SAR on missing person searches.

For more information about this warning to citizens, or to find out more about becoming a volunteer for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Posse, please call

388-6655.
