Family Planning


The Family Planning program provides low cost reproductive health services, birth control, STD testing, outreach and education in order to promote sexual health and well being, and to reduce unintended pregnancy.  Services are, by law, confidential to all persons.

Services provided by nurses, nurse practitioners and a doctor at the clinic:

  • Pregnancy tests and pregnancy counseling
  • Emergency contraception ("The morning after pill")
  • Birth control counseling and instructions
  • Pelvic exams and pap smears
  • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
  • Health education
  • HIV testing

Birth control counseling and instructions
Medical staff at the clinic will provide counseling and instructions for the following methods:

  • abstinence
  • birth control pills
  • condoms
  • Depo Provera injections ("the shot")
  • ECP (emergency contraception)
  • diaphragms and jelly
  • IUD's
  • natural family planning
  • Ortho Evra (Patch)
  • spermicide

 

Delayed Exam Option.
The Health Department offers the Smart Start or Delayed Exam program.  This program allows females to start a birth control method prior to having an exam.  This service is available during walk-in clinics or by appointment.  At the clinic, the nurse will carefully screen the client, counsel on contraceptive choices and their proper use, assess and instruct safer sex practices and dispense the birth control method.  The client will then need to return to the health department within 3 months for the physical exam and evaluation including a pap smear.

 

Health Education
Clients of the Health Department benefit from extensive education from the nursing staff that includes:

  • Breast Self Exams
  • assessment, counseling, & referral on how to stop smoking and/or chewing
  • assessment, counseling & referral for substance abuse
  • nutrition counseling
  • eating disorder referrals
  • STD/HIV risk assessment & prevention counseling
  • immunization recommendations
  • referral to services for additional medical, social, or financial assistance
