Different Types of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

  • Chlamydia  is the most common sexually transmitted disease.  Most people are unaware of their infection because often times it has no symptoms.  If untreated, it can cause serious and permanent damage to your reproductive organs.

Type of infection: Bacterial

Symptoms: Burning sensation when urinating, abnormal discharge. Women have similar symptoms to a bladder or vaginal infection, vaginal bleeding between periods

Screening: Urine test for men, cervical swab for women

Treatment: Antibiotics

  • Genital Herpes (HSV-2 or Herpes Simplex Virus-2) can be transmitted from visual sores in the genital or oral area.    It also can be transmitted when there are no visible symptoms.

Type of infection: Viral

Symptoms: Minimal symptoms but when they do occur, they appear as blisters on or around the genitals

Screening: Blood test. If there is an outbreak, the virus can be diagnosed with visual inspection and sampling the sore

Treatment:  Viral infections are permanent once you become infected.  However, anti-viral medications can shorten and prevent these outbreaks.

  • Gonorrhea , like Chlamydia also may not have signs or symptoms.    If untreated, this bacteria could cause permanent health problems in both men and women.

Type of infection: Bacterial

Symptoms: Burning sensation when urinating; white, yellow, or green discharge. Women have similar symptoms to a bladder or vaginal infection, vaginal bleeding between periods

Screening: Urethral cotton swab for men, cervical swab for women

Treatment: Antibiotics

  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus or Genital Warts) affects at least HALF of sexually active men and women.   While some people have visible warts caused by HPV, many carry the virus without knowing it and may infect their sexual partner.

Type of infection: Viral

Symptoms: Genital warts or no symptoms

Screening: If there are symptoms such as warts, HPV can be diagnosed by visual inspection.    If there are no symptoms, there is no test for HPV in men.  A pap test can be used to detect most types of HPV in women.

Treatment: Since it is a viral infection, once you’re infected you will always have it.   However, visible infections such as warts can be treated with cream or freezing.

Prevention: There is also an HPV Vaccine available for women ages

13 to 26 and is most effective for preventing HPV if given before girls become sexually active.

STIs that are not as common in Deschutes County, but do occur:

  • Hepatitis (viral): Testing with blood draw and is untreatable. A vaccine is available to prevent infection.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: This condition is caused by complications of other STDs such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.   Treatable with antibiotics but does not reverse damage that has occured.
  • Syphilis: Testing with blood draw and is a bacterial infection and treatable with antibiotics.
  • Trichomoniasis: Diagnosed via physical examination and lab tests and is treatable with medication.
