The juvenile justice system cannot succeed in changing the behavior of juvenile offenders or improving community safety without active community involvement. Individuals and invested groups have the tools, resources and power that the "system" does not possess. Juvenile justice activities must be structured around a core of interested, involved citizens. Roles for the community include:
Community Protection
-
Provide input to the juvenile justice system regarding protection issues.
-
Assist in providing opportunities for juvenile offenders to participate in structured, productive activities which benefit the community and/or provide opportunities for competency development.
-
Share responsibility for monitoring and reintegrating offenders in the community.
-
Address community issues that contribute to crime and delinquency.
-
Assist in holding the juvenile justice system accountable for fulfilling its responsibilities for community protection.
Accountability
-
Provide opportunities for valued community service and paid work experiences for juvenile offenders.
-
Provide assistance to crime victims, families, and their support systems.
-
Assist youthful offenders in completing contractual obligations by providing support and opportunities to offenders, families and their support systems.
-
Share responsibility for monitoring offenders.
-
Assist in holding the justice justice system accountable for fulfilling its responsibilities for offender accountability.
Competency Development
-
Partner with the juvenile justice system to provide opportunities for juvenile offenders to develop skills and competencies toward helping them to become positive, contributing community members.
-
Assist in holding the juvenile justice system accountable for fulfilling its responsibilities for competency development.
