Outdoor Lighting Ordinance
|
The Deschutes County Outdoor Lighting Ordinance was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners in 1994 in response to the demand to limit the visual impact from the rapidly increasing use of outdoor security lighting.
For several years county residents had complained about the loss of rural values and the unwanted impact from neighboring lights. As a result the ordinance was enacted to preserve and restore rural vistas, to eliminate the unwanted light spill to adjacent properties and to retain and restore the rural dark night time sky in Deschutes County.
Beginning August 31, 2000 the ordinance requires that all outdoor lighting, existing and new, comply with the design requirements of the Outdoor Lighting Ordinance. The County is looking for voluntary compliance with the new ordinance.
The Covered Lighting Ordinance Guide and other links listed on the right of this page will answer questions you may have about the ordinance and how it affects outdoor lighting. The guide also contains a simple method for determining if your outdoor lighting will need modification to comply with the ordinance. |
