BANNER CONTEST

BANNER MAKING INSTRUCTIONS

Banner Contest:

•    Show your spirit

•    Inspire others

•    Express yourself

•    Use your imagination!

•    Represent your team

•    Influence others

Youth teams will create banners based on the INSPIRE Youth Conference’s annual theme.  This year, the theme is:

“InsideOut:  Who inspires you?  Who do you inspire?”

Banners need to be created before the date of the conference and transported to the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond the morning of INSPIRE.  INSPIRE volunteers will post the banners and a contest will take place during the day.

Banners will be judged on:

  • Creativity
  • How the message ties into the theme
  • Team spirit, and
  • The effort put in to making the banner.

The winning teams will be announced at the end of the day and will receive a great prize!   Your team will be able to take your banner home from INSPIRE.

The 10th annual INSPIRE Youth Conference is also proud to announce that the Deschutes County 4-H Program has generously offered to display any of the tri-county youth team banners during the 2009 Deschutes County Fair, July 29 - August 2, 2009.  This is terrific exposure for your school or community group and helps INSPIRE the entire Deschutes County population!  Please plan to save your banner and transport it to/from the 2009 Deschutes County Fair.  Have fun with your group before the conference and bring your original banner!

If you have any questions regarding the banner call the Deschutes County Commission on Children & Families’ INSPIRE planning office at (541) 388-6619.

Banner Activity Instructions:

The banner activity is meant to provide the opportunity for all participating groups to create a project that will bring your team close together before attending the INSPIRE Youth Conference.

Creating a Banner:

Using the conference theme, your team task is to create a banner for your school or group.

Be sure to bring your banner to the Fair & Expo Center on the

morning of the INSPIRE Youth Conference.

Think about what message your team wants to share with other youth about alcohol, tobacco, other drug and violence prevention, about the value of diversity and acceptance, or about the importance of friendship, respect and getting along with others.   Be sure to include your school’s name and the year on the banner!

Your team can make a banner out of any material you choose.  The banner needs to be no more than 4 ft. by 8 ft.   Feel free to use paper, a sheet, or any other creative material to get your unique message out.

Jump-start that brainstorming!

Think about the 2008 theme, “InsideOut:  Who inspires you?  Who do you inspire?”

Here are some questions you might ask to draw out your interpretation of this theme:

  • Why did we choose the word InsideOut?  What could that mean in this context?
  • Who inspires you, or what inspires you?  What does he/she or it inspire you to do?
  • Who do you inspire?  Do you inspire positive actions in those people?
  • How can you inspire positive actions in others?

After you have brainstormed more about the theme, you can begin the fun part of brainstorming ideas for your banner.

One possibility is the Snowball method.

 Step 1:

Set guidelines.  Respect all incoming ideas.

 Step 2:

Write each idea out on a single sheet or half sheet of paper.  Wad them up like snowballs and throw them in a box in the middle of the team.

 Step 3:

Pick out a snowball, read it out loud and have the group decide if that idea works for the whole team.   As the team hears ideas, begin selecting the best ideas and set them aside in one stack.  Save the other ideas in another stack because you might realize as you go that one of the discard ideas can work well when paired with one of the selected ideas.

 Step 4:

Combine all the ideas into a plan to create the best banner that will represent your group.

 Step 5:

Sketch out your banner as a draft.  Decide on your materials and create your banner prior to INSPIRE!
