Youth Efforts

La Pine

La Pine Youth Coalition is made up of students in La Pine Middle School. These students have been visiting nearby retirement communities and nursing homes as part of their community service mission. What they are particularly proud of are their prevention related role playing which has been video taped by the high school technology class is going to be aired on the morning educational television in each of the classrooms. The role plays are interactive when done live in front of assemblies and are changing to fit with various topics of community concern. The focus of this group has been mainly on tobacco and marijuana prevention messages as well as teen age pregnancy prevention. For more information on La Pine Youth Coalition please contact Mary Fleishmann, La Pine Youth Diversion Services at marye@deschutes.or.us or Martin Sagnimeni at msagnime@bend.k12.or.us.

The La Pine High School formed a youth group named Students Improving School Atmosphere (SISA).   The group seeks to improve the atmosphere in their high school by enhancing school spirit, encouraging students to keep the school clean, and increasing the pride of the school.    The team is working to develop a positive sense of community within the school and increase positive youth development activities through collaboration with school administration and community leaders.   For more information contact Mary Fleischmann, marye@deschutes.or.us.

Redmond

Redmond High School has established a youth prevention team who call themselves CLASH (Changing Lives and Sharing Hearts).    This group has come together to accomplish a number of prevention activities.  They created a Prevention Float for Redmond's community Holiday Parade.  They have organized an underage drinking prevention campaign, Life Lights, which took place around Prom time.  They have assisted the adult prevention team with surveying young people in the community to determine the needs and gaps in the community around services to young people.  CLASH is currently working on plans for the summer and September back to school.  For more information on CLASH contact Fred Von Seggern at fvonsegg@redmond.k12.or.us or Laurel Variel at lvariel@redmond.k12.or.us or visit their web site at www.redmondpreventionteam.org.

In May 2003, the Redmond Community appointed twelve middle and high school youth to the Redmond Youth Advisory Board.   This Board is responsible for advocating for youth issues and assisting community members in youth focused priorities.   The Youth Advisory Board profile provide details on the current members.  Profile is saved in youth efforts file.

Sisters

Sisters Teens Organizing Prevention (STOP) has been very active in Central Oregon focusing mostly and mainly on underage drinking prevention.  In May and June of 2002, STOP’s first accomplishments included a number of Public Service Announcements on local radio and interviews with local television and radio stations.  In July 2002, three Sisters Teens attended a Youth Advocacy Training in Georgia with Oregon Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking.  In August 2002, upon the return from the advocacy training, STOP organized an underage drinking body outline project raising awareness around the consequences of alcohol use, misuse and abuse timed to coincide with the upcoming Labor Day Weekend.  They wrote and recorded alcohol prevention messages during the holidays and organized a Life Lights project on main street collecting pledges from community members to not drink and drive.  Coming up this spring and summer, STOP is shifting gears and planning on a project during the annual Sisters Rodeo.  This project is focusing on US Smokeless Tobacco and the consequences of using smokeless tobacco.  For more information on STOP contact Holly Lange at langeh@outlawnet.com.
