Our Early Childhood History
Early Strides Made in Early Childhood(accomplishments before 1997):
- Together For Children Started in 1989
- Healthy Start Prenatal Program in Early 90’s
- Great Start Committee Began in Late 80’s
- Child Abuse Forum in 1996
- Safety Net Began in 1997
1997-2001 Efforts
- First Step expanded county wide in 1998
- In 1999 the CCF and the community obtained a $200,000 grant for the Relief Nursery.
- Increased public education and awareness efforts
- The Community Plan was developed in 2000
1995-2001 Early Childhood Benchmarks:
- Increase % of children entering kindergarten ready to learn
- Child Care Availability-Increase # of child care slots per 100 children under age 13
- Prenatal Care-Increase % babies whose mothers who receive adequate prenatal care
- Infant Mortality-Decrease Infant Mortality
- Immunizations-Increase % of children immunized at age 2
- Child Abuse- Number of children abused or neglected per 1000 persons under 18
