Deschutes County Oregon -- 9/5/2011 --
September 4 to 10 is National Suicide Prevention Week and to build awareness and work toward suicide prevention, the Deschutes County Children & Families Commission and local video production company Visual Thinking has produced a public service announcement for air in Deschutes County next week.
Created to increase awareness about teen depression and how it is one of the risk factors for suicide, the video also encourages parents to reach out to teens who exhibit the warning signs of depression.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Oregon. With youth 10 to 24 years of age, suicide ties with cancer as the second leading cause of death in young people. On the brighter side, suicide is preventable and early recognition of warning signs and early intervention can save lives.
Disseminating information, improving education and training, and decreasing stigmatization are important goals to prevent suicide.
The suicide prevention video and trainings are sponsored by the Deschutes County Children & Families Commission through the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention Grant. Filming, editing, and distribution assistance has been donated by Kevin Raichl, owner of Visual Thinking.
