Safe Sidewalk Businesses Awarded June 22

Deschutes County Oregon -- 5/28/2011 --

This past year, five Deschutes County businesses and two organizations “cemented” their reputations for providing potential customers and pedestrians with a debris and hazard-free environment.  On June 22, the businesses will receive Safe Sidewalk Awards from the Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC).

For the first time, the award has been expanded to recognize year-round maintenance.

The Safe Sidewalk Awards will be presented at the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners Business Meeting held on Wednesday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m.  The meeting will be held in the Barnes and Sawyer Rooms (first floor) of the Deschutes County Services Center at 1300 NW Wall Street in Bend.

Each year, the award serves as a positive reminder to businesses that promptly removing snow and ice from sidewalks helps ensure the safety of pedestrians and attracts customers.  Along with the snow and ice of winter, there are many other hazards that are present year-round that need attention like low hanging vegetation, irrigation overspray, and deteriorating sidewalks. All of these conditions can create challenging and often dangerous conditions on sidewalks in commercial areas.
