Health Heroes Recognized for Service

Commute Options and County Nurse Practitioner Linda Burgel receive awards!

Deschutes County Oregon -- 4/26/2011 --

On Wednesday, April 27, the Deschutes County Public Health Advisory Board will be presenting its annual Public Health Heroes Awards. The awards are given to an individual and a group that has demonstrated excellence in promoting and protecting public health.

The awards will be presented tomorrow, April 27, at Noon at the Deschutes County Health Services Building in the Stan Owen conference room (first floor lobby). The Public Health Heroes award event is open to the public.

This year's individual category winner is Linda Burgel, who has been a woman’s health care nurse practitioner for 23 years and has worked at the Deschutes County Health Services Department since 1998. Linda plans to retire soon and will be greatly missed by fellow employees because she is considered an expert in her field. She has positively affected thousands of clients living in the County.

The group award goes to Commute Options (www.commuteoptions.org ) a non-profit organization that celebrated 20 years of service last year. Commute Options works hard to promote transportation alternatives to the residents of Deschutes County. The organization greatly impacts the health of residents while preserving the environment and resources.

"Both winners deserve congratulations and praise for their efforts in making Deschutes County a healthier place to live. The work these Public Health Heroes do every day often goes unnoticed, so this is our opportunity to say 'thanks for making a difference,'" said Deschutes County Public Health Advisory Board Chair Aylett Wright.
