Property Tax Reassessment

Deschutes County Oregon -- 3/22/2010 --

Deschutes County has received questions from several residents who received notices in the mail regarding property tax reassessment due to declines in the housing market. The notices are not from Deschutes County and contain inaccurate information. The notice claims to be a “2010 Property Tax Reduction Form” and asks the property owner to send a fee to have the company prepare and submit the necessary documentation to the County. Among the inaccuracies, the notices contain a statement of the property’s current assessed value and proposed assessed value for the 2010-2011 Tax Year. The assessments for the 2010-2011 tax year do not currently exist and will be mailed to property owners in October 2010.

Property values may be appealed to the Board of Property Tax Appeals (BOPTA), as prescribed by Oregon law, beginning each year the day after tax statements are mailed (middle to end of October) until December 31st. There is no fee to file an appeal with BOPTA.

For more information about the Board of Property Tax Appeals, please visit www.co.deschutes.or.us and click on the Deschutes County Clerk’s Office web-page or call 541-388-6548. For questions about property assessment, residents are encouraged to visit the Deschutes County Assessor’s Office or call 541-388-6508.

Finally, the Oregon Department of Justice recently issued a press release on misleading property tax reduction scams. The press release can be found at www.doj.state.or.us/releases/2010/rel031910a.shtml
