Monitor Irrigation System Settings for Safety

Deschutes County Oregon -- 10/13/2011 --

As fall weather advances in Central Oregon, the Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee would like to remind residents to double-check their irrigation system coverage as a safety precaution to prevent injuries.

Systems not properly calibrated can cause overspray on nearby sidewalks and streets. Cooler temperatures experienced evenings and mornings can cause water to freeze on sidewalks, creating a dangerous slipping hazard for pedestrians and cyclists.

Please consider testing all systems to ensure that adjacent walkways and roadways are not accidentally being irrigated.

Accidents do occur in Deschutes County on icy sidewalks and streets. In one recent incident, the street was covered in irrigation overspray water that had become ice. A cyclist slipped on the icy street and was hospitalized. Another incident involved a pedestrian who slipped on an icy sidewalk and required medical treatment.

While slipping incidents are not common, they may be preventable with cooperation from homeowners, businesses and landscaping professionals.

The Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee is a County appointed group that works to promote and encourage safe bicycling and walking as a significant means of transportation in Deschutes County.

For more information about pedestrian or bicycle transportation safety, please call the Deschutes County Community Development Department at (541) 383-6718.
