Free Suicide Prevention Training to be Held in Sisters

Deschutes County Oregon -- 9/28/2011 --

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Oregon. Early recognition of warning signs and early intervention can save lives. Deschutes County is coordinating a suicide prevention training in Sisters Tuesday, October 11.

The training, called “Question, Persuade, Refer” or QPR, is open to all residents of Deschutes County. The free training will inform attendees how to know a loved one is at risk of suicide. During the one-hour class, certified QPR instructors will teach participants the warning signs for suicide and three simple steps that may save a life. This is an educational program and is not intended to provide therapy to anyone who has experienced a recent loss or who may be at risk for suicide.

The suicide prevention training will be held:
Tuesday, October 11 from 6:00 to -7:00 p.m.
Sisters High School (in the Lecture/Drama Room)
1700 W. McKinney Butte Rd.
No RSVP is required. Light refreshments provided.

The training includes a free suicide prevention resource guide. Please consider donating $5 to help fund suicide prevention activities in Deschutes County.

Other suicide prevention (QPR) trainings this month include: October 17 in Redmond, October 18 in Bend and October 19 in La Pine. Please visit www.deschutes.org/suicideprevention for times and locations.

These trainings are sponsored in partnership by the Deschutes County Children & Families Commission and the Deschutes County Health Services Department. Sponsored in part by the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention Grant.
