2011 Fair & Rodeo Grand Marshal Announced

Veteran broadcaster R.L. Garrigus will lead the parade next year!

Deschutes County Oregon -- 11/4/2010 --

The Deschutes County Fair Association is proud to announce that local broadcaster R.L. Garrigus has been named the 2011 Deschutes County Fair and Rodeo Grand Marshal.

R.L. was chosen to be next year’s Grand Marshal for several reasons. He has been the Fair Parade master of ceremonies for the past 30 years, announcing the parade entrees and participants as they pass through the intersection of 6th and Evergreen in downtown Redmond. In his job as radio news broadcaster, R.L. helped the Fair Association inform County voters about the bond election that passed and paid for the construction of the new Fair & Expo Center that opened in 1999.

R.L. came to Central Oregon in 1979 after working at a radio station in Olympia, WA. He was the news director for KICE and the Radio Rangers. R.L. became part owner of the station, which was eventually sold to the Bend Radio Group where he works as news director. R.L. is the announcer for the Sisters Rodeo and Crooked River Round-Up parades and can be seen and heard on a variety of local TV and radio commercials.

R.L. is the recipient of numerous awards locally, statewide and nationally for his news coverage and community involvement. He is in the Oregon Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame as the Heritage Broadcaster of the year in 2004. Throughout his 31-year broadcasting career, he has written and produced over 100,000 newscasts!

The Bend City Council and Deschutes County Board of Commissioners honored R.L. in 2004 proclaiming January 22 as "R.L. Garrigus Day," acknowledging his service to the Central Oregon Community. R.L. supports a variety of conservation groups including the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
