Community Accountability Services, often referred to as
diversion programs, encompass a variety of programs and services unique to each community. Targeting youth referred for first-time, misdemeanor offenses and/or violations, Community Accountability Services are designed to hold youth accountable within the community by providing sanctions and treatment services without more formal juvenile justice system involvement.
La Pine Youth Diversion
Diversion services offered in La Pine include a Teen Court program for eligible youth who must admit guilt and appear for a hearing before a jury of their peers who decide and impose appropriate sanctions. Most youth offenders participating in teen court are also required to serve as jurors at future teen court cases. The process helps these youth understand and appreciate the judicial process, enhances social and vocational skills and provides an opportunity to participate in a positive experience in their community.
Individual programs are also offered for first-time offenders who may not be appropriate for Teen Court due to age, nature of offense or other special circumstances. These youth and their parents/guardians are required to meet with a community justice officer to review their case and develop an appropriate accountability plan, specific to the needs of the youth, their victim and the community.
Sisters Youth Diversion
Diversion services in Sisters consist primarily of individualized programs developed by a community justice officer for youth referred for first-time, misdemeanor offenses and/or violations. A Community Accountability Board has been used effectively in the past and remains one of several community accountability programs available, depending on referral trends, department resources and community needs.
