SkidCar History and Background

Deschutes County's SkidCar program began in 1997 as a training tool for County employees. In the first year of operation, winter related driving accidents were significantly reduced, resulting in a tremendous savings to Deschutes County.

In 2001, Deschutes County began offering SkidCar training to the general public. Since then, thousands of people in the public and private sectors have successfully completed the course.

Deschutes County's SkidCar incorporates the same technology used by Oregon law enforcement agencies. This technology is also used by the FBI, CIA, and the Presidential Protection Detail of the Secret Service.

The SkidCar system uses a regular street vehicle mounted on a heavy frame with outriggers. The instructor uses a hydraulic lift and a computer to raise the car, reducing traction on front tires, back tires, or both. The SkidCar can simulate driving conditions of rain, ice, and snow while allowing drivers to gain experience and confidence in a safe and controlled environment.

This is a great opportunity to get ready for winter driving if you are learning to drive, new to the area, or just want to improve your driving skills.
